Great South 5k – get route ready
First things first – check out the route map on the Great South 5k page (and download it so it’s even clearer). You’ll also receive an email with a link to your Event Guide with more detailed route information closer to the event, so look out!
Let’s take a look at what you can expect:
● The race starts and finishes on Clarence Esplanade, by The Pyramids Centre. From there, you’ll head out past the D-Day Museum turning right through Southsea Common before turning and heading along Lady’s mile (first 2km).
● The middle section sees runners join South Parade, merging onto Eastney Esplanade until the U-turn point where you’ll head back on Eastney Esplanade, along the beachside.
● Finally, you’ll cross the finish line on Clarence Esplanade close to The Pyramids Centre – (HMS). Victory is yours! Your well-earned medal will be waiting at the finish line along with plenty of bragging rights.
Route need-to-knows and training tips:
● Flat means fast. Yes, you’ll hit some minor rises and falls here and there, but this really is one of the flattest 5k races around. Don’t skimp on the training, though – and if you build in hills and strength exercises you’ll find it really pays off on the big day.
● Be weather-wise. Training in all weathers gets you used to different climatic conditions. Remember, coastal running can be windier than inland, and cool breezes can make us forget the sunscreen.
● Stay motivated. Cheer other Great South Runners on (or at least give them some kudos) on our Strava Great South Run Group. And don’t forget, you can share your training with us on Facebook, X, Instagram and TikTok. Remember, sharing progress and goals keep you accountable.
Happy training – we’ll see you at the start line!
